Paul Alessi, a cherished member of the South Boston and Quincy communities, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Born on January 9, 1947, Paul’s life was marked by devotion to family, community, and the vibrant spirit of the neighborhoods he called home.
Paul was the son of Joseph and Helen Alessi, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in South Boston, Southie, where his roots ran deep. Paul answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy, where he was a Petty Officer Third Class, an E4. His job title was Yeoman Third Class or YN3. Paul also proudly earned the National Defense Service Medal for his dedication. After his honorable service, he returned to South Boston and, alongside his friend Walter Gropp, opened The Italian American Restaurant, affectionately known as The IA. This establishment quickly grew into more than just a place to dine—it became a second family and a hub of community life, a place where Paul’s passion for his heritage and neighborhood flourished.
Paul married Mary-Margaret (Fitzpatrick) Alessi in 1976, and together they started a family while living in an apartment above The IA. Eventually, the family moved to Quincy, where Paul’s role as a loving husband and devoted father shone brightly. Paul supported all of Mary-Margarets passions, especially her love for dance and he attended all of her performances. He was actively involved in every aspect of his children’s lives, attending sports games, dance recitals, and school events with unwavering enthusiasm. His commitment to being present in both the triumphs and the everyday moments made a lasting impression on his children and grandchildren alike.
Paul is survived by his loving partner, Nancy Wuschke of Quincy, who provided steadfast care and companionship in his later years, enabling him to remain at home surrounded by love and familiar comforts. He was also deeply proud of his siblings: Joseph Alessi of South Boston, Maria Alessi of Brighton, MA, and Linda Alessi of Dedham, MA.
Paul’s children—Paul Alessi of Weymouth, MA; Lynette Taylor, with husband Gregory Taylor of Cohasset, MA; and Patrick Alessi of Worcester, MA—carry forward his legacy. Paul held a special place in his heart for Erica Cerqueira and Alexis Courtney, whom he considered family. The joy Paul found in his role as a grandfather was profound and multifaceted. Known lovingly as both “Grandpa” and “Papa,” he was a proud grandfather to Patrick and Sophie, and a doting papa to Amelia, Alexis, Kenzie, and Michael, each of whom held a unique place in his heart.
The Italian American Restaurant was more than a business to Paul; it was a living, breathing extension of his family. Alongside Mary-Margaret’s work bartending and waitressing, and with his children helping with kitchen prep, cooking, serving, and deliveries, The IA was a second home and community anchor. His generosity extended beyond his family, as evidenced by his ongoing support of South Boston youth sports teams, sponsorships, celebratory events, and his spirited role in Italian Pride night—a much-anticipated block party that brought the community together year after year.
In his final years, Paul faced mobility challenges but remained deeply connected to his loved ones, cherishing updates, photos, and videos of family activities. His happiness always stemmed from the joy of those around him. He had many passions that included a love for Boston sports, Mai Tais, The Godfather movies, dancing, Marilyn Monroe, his 1983 Riviera Convertible, and his ever-famous hair. Timeliness was one of his quirks, and he appreciated when others honored it as well.
Paul’s warmth, generosity, and dedication to family and community leave an indelible mark on all who knew him. He is mourned and remembered by loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and a wide circle of friends who cherished him deeply.
Paul’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those he loved and served so well throughout his lifetime. May his memory be a blessing to all who were fortunate to know him.
In Liu of Flowers, please donate in Paul's name to the Boys and Girls Club of Boston.
