Pvt. Alfred T. Langevin

Emblem

It is with solemn honor and heartfelt reverence that we announce the homecoming of Private Alfred Thomas Langevin, U.S. Army, who was killed in Action during World War II and remained Missing in Action for over 80 years.

Pvt. Langevin was born on March 3, 1915, in Jackson Square, Weymouth, Massachusetts. He was the beloved son of the late Alfred Ernest and Elizabeth Rita (Morris) Langevin. Pvt. Langevin was the middle sibling to Irene Elizabeth Langevin and Marguerite Alice Langevin. He grew up in a humble family home at 797 Broad Street, where the values of hard work, faith, and service to others shaped his life.

Pvt. Langevin attended Weymouth Public Schools until the hardships of the Great Depression led him to support his family. He later became a grocer in Jackson Square. Pvt. Langevin married his wife Helen F. Langevin, and together they had a young daughter, Mary, who was just a toddler at the time of his deployment.

Pvt. Langevin entered active military service on January 31, 1944, from Boston. He was assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division and deployed to the European Theater during some of the most intense combat operations of the war.

On November 6, 1944, during the brutal Battle of the Hürtgen Forest, Pvt. Langevin was reported Missing in Action near the town of Hürtgen, Germany. The exact circumstances of his loss remain uncertain, though it is believed he was killed in his defensive position amid heavy artillery bombardment.

In the years that followed, American efforts to locate his remains were hindered by treacherous terrain, landmines, and the chaos of war. His name was etched on the Walls of the Missing at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands, as a tribute to his sacrifice.

In June 2021, a renewed identification effort led by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and the American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed a set of remains from the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium, known only as "X-2756." After advanced DNA testing and forensic analysis, those remains were positively identified as Pvt. Alfred T. Langevin on July 30, 2025, a breakthrough 81 years in the making.

Pvt. Langevin’s nephew, Patrick Thompson, of Media, Pennsylvania, played a key role in providing the familial DNA that helped bring Pvt. Langevin home.

Pvt. Langevin is survived by his nephew Patrick, and the extended Langevin family. Though time has passed, the love for Alfred and the grief of his absence have never faded.

The Town of Weymouth welcomes fellow veterans, Gold Star families, local students, civic organizations, and anyone wishing to honor the life and sacrifice of Pvt. Alfred T. Langevin. Let us join as a community to give him the homecoming he has long deserved.

Pvt. Alfred T. Langevin, United States Army, will lie in honor at Weymouth Town Hall, 75 Middle Street, on Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 12 to 3 PM. All are welcome to pay tribute.

On Monday, November 10, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM, Pvt. Alfred T. Langevin will be escorted from McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, South Weymouth, to Fairmount Cemetery. The funeral procession will travel through the streets of Weymouth, which will include a final pass through Jackson Square, where he was born and raised.
