Richard W.
Bergen
August 22, 1931 – April 7, 2026
Richard W. Bergen, fondly known as "Gramps," of Quincy, passed away peacefully at home on April 7th with his family by his side. He was 94 years old.
Loving father of Cathy Bergen of Quincy, and Barry Bergen and his wife Zhen of Quincy. Cherished grandfather of Linda Bergen and her husband Edward Chapin of Brockton; Annie Bergen and her partner Peter Jansen of Walpole; and Alexander Bergen and his fiancée Samantha Rheaume of Seabrook, New Hampshire. Beloved great-grandfather of Leo Cleary of Quincy, and Travis Testa and his husband Timothy of Orlando, Florida.
Born in Boston, Richard worked as an installer for Verizon for many years. He was a man of simple pleasures who enjoyed reading detective novels, watching old westerns, and listening to sports talk radio. He was a familiar sight around Wollaston on his daily walks to Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee and an egg and cheese croissant: then to the smoke shop for the Lottery and the Boston Herald.
Gramps was a constant presence in the lives of his family, attending every track meet, basketball game, soccer match, and Taekwondo class for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He never missed a school play, concert, or science fair. He was a peaceful man, moving gently through life, making ripples only with his awful jokes. He left as quietly and gracefully as he lived; now, he can forever watch old movies, read detective novels, and listen to the ballgame on the radio.
His devoted family bids him a tender and loving farewell. His chair in the living room is empty. We miss him. Rest in peace, Gramps. A funeral mass was celebrated on Friday, April 10th, at Saint Ann's Church in Quincy. Burial followed at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester.
