Richard J. Dempsey

Dempsey, Richard J. “Dick” of Hingham, formerly Wollaston, died March 5, 2018 at age 86.

Dick was a gifted three sport athlete while attending Mount Saint Charles Academy in RI, achieving Hall of Fame status.  He captained the Boston College hockey team and earned a Bachelor’s degree at BC.  After college, he was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps stationed in Quantico in VA.  Dick was the former Director of Construction for the MBTA and Vice President of Business Development at Gilbane and subsequently at Perini Corporation.  He was a longtime youth hockey coach in Hingham, former president at Hatherly Country Club in Scituate, and an avid golfer. Dick was an all around great guy with a dry sense of humor, loved by all who knew him and adored by his family. In his later years, he loved spending time with his daughter Kathleen, who has special needs.

Devoted husband for 62 years to the late Jean M. (Holstead) Dempsey. Loving father of Stephen M. Dempsey and his wife Jennifer of Mansfield, Kathleen Dempsey of Hingham, and Susan E. Dempsey of Holbrook. Beloved grandfather to Kevin Dempsey of Nashville, TN and Katie Dempsey of Cambridge. Predeceased by 5 siblings. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours to honor both Dick and his wife Jean on Friday, March 16th, 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 AM on Saturday, March 17th prior to the Funeral Mass in Church of the Resurrection, Hingham at 10 AM for both. Burial in High Street Cemetery, Hingham. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard may be made to Alzheimers Assn., MA Chapter, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452.
