Richard Akeroyd Mason

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that after many years, Richard (Dick) Akeroyd Mason has finally lost his fight with a muscular disease known as Inclusion Body Myositis. While his body failed over time, his intelligence, wit, and most of all humor, suffered no such degradation.

Dick was born February 8th, 1944, and spent his childhood with his parents and three siblings, Bill, Ellen, and Jeff in their hometown of Needham, MA, where he thrived in wrestling and hockey. Between the Masons boys and their friends, they earned quite the reputation for shenanigans and hijinks all over town. But it was at their summer home in Duxbury, MA that Dick truly learned his love for the sea.

Dick enlisted in the United States Navy, serving honorably as a Lieutenant on a refueling tanker. Lt. Mason brought this marine expertise to bear in Hingham Harbor, showing innovation in the execution of the unplanned scuttling of vessels. Life on the water was where he belonged and where he was most at peace.

Dick absolutely adored his family. His beautiful wife of 37 years Jennifer, his sons Richie (33), Tyler (31) and his elegant daughter Grace (31). He poured all his heart into his family, leading with confidence, and a cunning eye for the wonder of life, and the humor it contains. His final days were spent rejoicing and reminiscing of days gone by and singing classic rock ballads. He had an illustrious career in real estate finance and was known for synthesizing complicated layered financing proposals onto a one page, bullet-pointed sheet of paper.

In addition to his family, Dick sought much joy over the years through his passions such as boating in Boston Harbor, Skiing the Northeast, all things cars and racing like Nascar and F1, and of course watching “Our Tom” bring home Six Super Championships. Like many in New England, he is optimistically awaiting the return of Mikey Vrabel, to return the Patriots to former glory.

Those who wish to say a final farewell to a former family member, coworker, and friend may do so at his wake at Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald Street, Hingham, MA on Sunday July 6th from 3:00PM to 7:00PM, or attend the funeral at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 147 North Street, Hingham, MA on Monday July 7th at 10:00AM.
