Richard N. Puopolo (aka “Candyman”) age 73, of Weymouth, Massachusetts passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and favorite music, on Sunday, September 10, 2023 after a long illness.
Born and raised in Weymouth, Richard was the son of Elva (Gowell) and Albert Puopolo. Richard was best known for his kind and empathic nature, sharp and sometimes corny sense of humor (no one told a better “Dad Joke!”), dedication to his work as a small business owner and passion for his dogs (two “dobies” and one very spoiled…er, special min pin) and cars (especially his BMWs and his Porsche). Above all, Richard was recognized for being the best “Bop Bop” to his grandchildren. Even through his illness, he could be found picking up and chasing around his four precious babies and designing some pretty epic Magic Tracks courses spread all throughout the living room floor.
Much of Richard’s life was spent committed to his business, Puopolo Candies, he and his loving wife, Debbie, built from the ground up. He was a lifelong “chocolatier,” but so much more than that as the creative brain behind every unique and delicious treat and concept at their store, which have become a staple for many local and widespread families.
While his work kept him very busy, Richard always made time for friends and family, whether it was a drive up to Beverly to visit his oldest daughter or attending a car show with his youngest daughter and his two grandsons. He also enjoyed attending and watching Celtics games through their ups and downs during the past 73 years. Richard was an avid tennis player and followed all of the USTA tournaments all year long. In his infrequent down time, Richard could be found in his garage, remodeling and perfecting his restored cars.
Most of all, Richard will be remembered for his selflessness and generous heart. He always put others first and always wanted the best for those around him.
Predeceased by his parents, Albert and Elva (Gowell) Puopolo, sister, Bette Spain, sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Phil Ford, brother Albert Puopolo, and niece, Jacqueline Ford. He was also predeceased by his loyal pets, Miranda, Keisha and Mr. JD.
Survived by his brother Arthur Puopolo, loving sister and brother-in-law, Elva and Roger Young, brother-in-law, Stanley Spain, several cousins, nieces and nephews; including Phillip, Leesa, and Roger, grandnieces and grandnephews; including William and Lillian.
Devoted husband of 45 years to Deborah (Hemphill) Puopolo and the best father ever to his two adoring daughters and their partners, Rene Puopolo Smith and Tim Smith and Rachel Puopolo and Anthony LaRocco. He will be forever “Bop-Bop” to his four grandchildren, Corinne, Ava, Nico, and Dante, who were and will continue to live on as his pride and joy.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Wednesday, September 13th from 4 – 7pm in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off Route 3A – Bicknell Square). Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 14th at 11:00am in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea St. Burial in Fairmount Cemetery in Weymouth.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity near and dear to Richard’s heart: tinyurl.com/inlovingmemoryrp or to a charity close to your own heart.
