Richard A. "Rich" Nigro, longtime resident of Weymouth, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 87.
Rich was born in Everett on June 28, 1939, and was the son of the late Jacob and Angelina (Gargano) Nigro. He was raised in Everett, attended local schools, and graduated from Everett High School.
Rich built a life defined by dedication, quiet strength, and enduring relationships. He spent 36 years working for The Boston Globe, where he met the love of his life, Ruth. Together they shared a devoted marriage of 50 years until Ruth's passing in 2022.
Rich was a lifelong sports enthusiast whose athletic talents earned him the distinction of being drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He carried that love of sports throughout his life, enjoying games, following his favorite teams, and sharing his enthusiasm with those around him. Something very special to Rich was as a young man he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers Major League Baseball team. An achievement that so many can only dream about, he achieved, and held the experience near and dear to him throughout his life.
Beyond sports, Rich was an avid collector with a remarkable train collection that reflected both his passion and attention to detail. He found great joy in the hobby and took pride in the collection he built over the years.
Those who knew Rich will remember him as a quiet, funny, and dependable man. He possessed a steady presence, a subtle sense of humor, and a kindness that left a lasting impression on family and friends.
Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruth M. (Cummings) Nigro. He leaves behind his extended family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 11-12 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Route 18 opposite of South Shore Hospital).
His funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 12 PM in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, South Weymouth. Cremation will follow. Interment is private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Richard's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by clicking here.
