Richard A. “Dick” Shimkus, of Quincy, formerly of South Boston, passed away on February 17, 2026. He was 74 years old.
Born on November 10, 1951, Dick was the beloved son of the late Anne (Flaherty) and William Shimkus. He spent his early years in the close-knit community of South Boston, where he attended and graduated from South Boston High School, forming lifelong friendships and cherished memories.
Dick loved his job working as a truck driver/furniture mover for Teamsters Local 25. He took great pride in his work and the friendships he built along the way.
Dick was a man of many passions. He loved playing football for South Boston High School, and later for the South Boston Chippewas. His love for football was unmatched, and he could often be found cheering on his favorite teams. He also enjoyed skiing in New Hampshire with his brother-in-law Tom and family. His social nature was a cornerstone of his personality—he had an uncanny ability to light up any room, and his quick wit and sense of humor brought joy to all who knew him. He truly was the life of the party.
Family meant everything to Dick. He was happiest when helping those he loved, whether fixing something around the house, helping a family member move, or stepping in wherever he was needed. He treasured the holidays, especially the time spent gathered with family. At celebrations, he could often be found singing and dancing, filling the room with laughter and happiness.
Dick especially loved being a dad to Kate, the” light of his life.” His unwavering and endless support was one of his greatest gifts, and she always knew she could count on him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jeanne A. (Reilly) Shimkus of Quincy; his daughter, Katherine A. Shimkus of Quincy; and his beloved canine companion, Princess. He was the dear brother of Gerry Shimkus and his wife Linda of Franklin, and was predeceased by his siblings Vincent, Paul, and David Shimkus. Dick was the loving brother-in-law of Patricia and Thomas Clancy of Quincy; Stephen Reilly of Cohasset; John and Paige Reilly of Quincy; and Patricia Reilly of Braintree (formerly of South Boston), and was predeceased by James, Paul, Carol, and Carolyn Reilly. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 9:30–10:30 AM at Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the funeral home at 10:15 AM, prior to the Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Quincy, at 11:00 AM. Cremation will follow.
