Listen to Obituary

Rita Joan (Messina) Garufi, of Roslindale, formerly of Weymouth, died peacefully in her son’s home in Mansfield, surrounded by her loving family, on May 21, 2026 at the age of 86.

Rita was born in Boston on February 3, 1940, and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Rizzo) Messina. Raised in Dedham, Rita was a proud graduate of St. Mary’s Middle School in Dedham and Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Brighton. She continued her education at Chandler’s Business School, preparing for a life defined by both intellect and dedication. In 2011 Rita received a certification in Gerontology from University of Massachusetts, Boston and became a member of the National Gerontology Academic Honor and Professional Society of Sigma Phi Omega. Rita had a natural gift for the English language, a deep appreciation for literature, and she remained intellectually curious throughout her life, always keeping up with current events.

On August 6, 1960, Rita married the love of her life, Francis Frederick Garufi, at St. Mary’s Church in Dedham. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and shared experiences. Their love of travel brought them to multiple destinations, especially Bermuda, England, Italy and Disney, which were locations that held a special place in their hearts.

Rita was fiercely independent, yet deeply devoted to her family. She raised her children with unwavering love, instilling in them the virtues she held most dear: Faith, Hope, and Love. A woman of great faith, she found inspiration in Saint Francis and lived her life with compassion and humility.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Rita loved spending time at Nantasket Beach in Hull, listening to sports radio, and cheering on the Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed games of Scrabble, Bridge, and time spent laughing with friends. Summers were especially meaningful, often filled with camping trips and cherished family traditions, such as bringing her children to the Boston fireworks on the Esplanade.

Her generosity extended beyond her own family. Rita opened her home one summer to inner-city children, creating a welcoming space where they could play, picnic, and simply be children. This quiet act of kindness reflected the depth of her character. Later in life, Rita devoted her time to St. Albert’s Parish in Weymouth, where she served the parish community and clergy as the parish secretary.

Rita had a special love for German Shepherds, including Nikki, who was always her loyal companion. During the Save St. Albert the Great Church perpetual vigil in 2004, Nikki would accompany Rita as she slept overnight in the church with other passionate parishioners. She found beauty in nature, had a fondness for marigolds, and took pride in the warmth and richness of her home, where cherry wood accents reflected her classic taste.

Rita’s legacy is made up by her life lessons and example; which will continue through her family. She will be missed by all the lives she touched.

Predeceased in death by her husband, Frank. Rita is survived by her six sons, David and his wife Vanessa, of Mansfield; Michael and his wife Kelley, of Mendon; Mark and his wife Patti, of Milton; Joseph and his wife Sonia, of Roslindale; John and his wife Michelle, of Holliston; Matthew and his wife Nicole, of Mansfield; her grandchildren, Francesca and her husband Nicholas, Devon; Lauren and her fiancé Thomas; Alexandria and her husband John, Ericka and her husband Eric, Emme; Sophia, Anthony; Maya, Samuel, Dominic; Tessa, Gianna; her great-grandchildren, Gavin; Levi, Isla; Madeline; Ezekiel, Milo. She is survived by her sister Roberta and predeceased by her brothers Robert (Beth), Richard (Mary-Anne). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “The Society of St. Vincent de Paul” or a charity you hold dear.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday 5/28/2026 in St. Albert the Great Church, Weymouth at 10 AM followed by a burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Weymouth.
