Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Robert J. Fleming of Quincy, Massachusetts, passed away surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was the beloved husband of Janice Fleming, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage and father of four boys and lovingly known as Da to his thirteen wonderful grandchildren.

Bob was the son of the late Edward and Ethel Fleming of Midleton, County Cork, Ireland and the brother of the late Marie Breton of Saugus, Massachusetts, and the late Joan Duane and Ethel (Honey) April, both of Quincy, Massachusetts.

Raised in Old Harbor Village in South Boston, Bob developed at an early age the strong sense of family, loyalty, and community that would remain at the heart of his life. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

Following his military service, Bob attended Suffolk University followed by Suffolk University Law School and went on to practice law in Quincy for more than 50 years where his two sons, Ed and Rob, later joined him in practice. Throughout his long legal career, he was an Assistant District Attorney in District Attorney George Burke’s office, trying 6-man jury trails. He served Mayors Walter Hannon and Arthur Tobin as City Solicitor. Bob was known throughout the City of Quincy for his friendship, kindness and dedication to his clients, his community, and the many people whose lives he touched.

Above all, Bob was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janice; his sons, Edward Fleming and his wife, Kelly, of Quincy; Robert Fleming, Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Brookline; Christopher Fleming and his wife, Joan, of Fairfield, Connecticut; and Eric Fleming and his wife, Kelly, of Cohasset; as well as thirteen cherished grandchildren.

Bob believed strongly in giving back and quietly supported many organizations and causes that were important to him. Among them were his alma maters, Cathedral High School in Boston's South End, and Suffolk University, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Children's Hospital, Toys for Tots, Wounded Warrior Project, and numerous other schools, veterans' organizations, and charitable causes.

Menauhant held a particularly special place in Bob’s heart. He and his family first came to the Falmouth’s summer community in 1979, and for decades, he and Jan spent their summers there with their four boys and their families, building traditions and forming lifelong friendships that became an important part of their family’s life. Bob embraced all that summers that the Cape had to offer and was a frequent runner of the Falmouth Road Race. Menauhant remained a place of friendship, family, and many treasured memories throughout his life.

He had a deep and abiding love for his family and friends and took great pride in the accomplishments and happiness of those around him. He will be remembered for his generosity, loyalty, devotion to family, commitment to his community, and the many friendships he formed throughout his life.

Bob leaves behind a family and community deeply enriched by his love, his service, and his friendship. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday, August 24th from 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:45 AM on Tuesday, August 25th, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church, Quincy at 10:30 AM. Burial in Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
