Robert “Bob” Joseph Canavan, age 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
Born and raised in Boston, Bob spent his childhood and early married life there before moving to Hingham to raise his family. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Suffolk University in 1964, followed by his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School just two years later. Bob was a standout member of the Suffolk University debate team; he was known as one of the top individual debaters in the country and led the team to its first national title at the Pi Kappa Delta National Convention and Tournament in 1964. Suffolk University has long cited this 1964 win as a defining moment that proved the school could defeat the nation’s elite institutions.
Bob proudly served his country as a member of the Army National Guard. After his admission to the Massachusetts Bar in 1967, he spent more than five decades building a distinguished career as an attorney. With his indefatigable preparation and brilliant legal mind, Bob was a formidable courtroom litigator, skilled mediator, expert in government and labor law, and tireless advocate for workers’ rights.
An insatiable lifelong learner, Bob was an avid reader with a deep passion for history, literature, astronomy, mathematics, and economics. He was also a gifted and enthusiastic fisherman who knew the waters of Boston Harbor, Hingham Harbor, and Cape Cod like the back of his hand. Many of his happiest days were spent aboard his beloved Boston Whaler with his wife Maureen and their three daughters, all of whom he taught to fish. In later years, he took great joy in sharing those same boat adventures with his cherished grandchildren.
Bob was an avid traveler who explored Europe, Asia, Russia, and the Caribbean alongside his beloved wife Maureen. He embraced the sights, history, culture, music, and cuisine of every destination, yet nothing brought him greater happiness than returning home to the United States—the country he loved so deeply.
Bob is predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Maureen. He is survived by his three devoted daughters: Maura Talbot and her husband Richard, Joan Kilban and her husband Mark, and Nancy Anderson and her husband Timothy. He also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren—Kevin Talbot, and his fiancée Julia Foley, Kathleen Kilban, Colleen Talbot, Sean Kilban, and Maria Anderson—who adored their “Papa” and will miss him dearly.
A private family service will be held to celebrate Bob’s life. The family is grateful for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
