Robert J. Johnston, of Abington retired Boston Police Sergeant, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025 at the age of 78.
Born and raised in Dorchester, Robert attended Don Bosco High School before earning a degree in History from Boston State College. Following his graduation, he began a long and distinguished career with the Boston Police Department, where he served the city faithfully for 36 years. While working as an officer, Robert continued his education, earning a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College. He retired in 2010 with the rank of Sergeant.
Though deeply committed to his work, Robert was just as passionate about his family and the simple joys of life. He was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, had a fondness for a winning scratch ticket and his daily copy of the Patriot Ledger. Most of all, spending time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, joking around, and making memories they’ll cherish forever.
Robert is predeceased in life by his beloved wife Paula Johnston (Murray). Devoted father of Kimberly Johnston of Abington, Robert Johnston and wife Marlaina Johnston of Lynn, Jessica Murphy and husband Jason Murphy of Hingham, and Kaitlyn McGary and husband Lucas McGary of Milton; Cherished Grandpa of Finola, Rowan, Harper, Colm, Carson, Gavin, Camryn, James and Stella. Brother to Arlene Dwyer, Patricia Feeney and John Johnston. Robert is predeceased in life by his parents Edward and Catherine Johnston, his siblings Mary McKenney, Josephine Cunningham, Thomas Johnston, Virginia Farnsworth, Denice Cunningham and Susan Johnston. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Monday 9/8/2025 from 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Funeral service will be celebrated on Tuesday 9/9/2025 at 11 AM in McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main St. (Rt. 18 opp. South Shore Hospital), Weymouth. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
