Robert F. “Bob” McCarthy, Retired Boston Police Sergeant, of Hingham, formerly of Hull and Weymouth, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. He was 80 years old.
He was born in Boston to Mary (Lyons) and William McCarthy and raised in Dorchester. He graduated from Don Bosco Technical High School and was in the US Army Reserves for 6 years. While in the Reserves, he began working as an officer in the Boston Police Department. He retired after 37 years of serving and protecting. Later in life, Bob went back to school and earned his bachelor’s degree at Ana Maria College.
Bob met his wife, Janice (Long) on a blind date set up by mutual friends, and they hit it off. They had 31 beautiful years together, living in both Hull and Hingham before his passing. His family meant everything to him. He was truly his happiest surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.
In his spare time, he loved being outdoors and exercising. In the warmer months he would swim, bike and spend most of his time at the beach. During the winter he could be found skiing with his friend group, fondly named “The Wolf Pack”. Bob was the life of every party — vibrant, outgoing, and endlessly kind. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome, bringing laughter and warmth wherever he went. Known for his humor, open heart, and infectious energy, Bob was loved by people from all walks of life. Bob and Janice had many memorable Friday night dates with their great friends, George and Alice Lotti. His spirit will live on in the countless memories he helped create and the many lives he touched.
Beloved husband of 25 years to Janice McCarthy of Hingham. Devoted father of Tricia Molisse of Kingston, Lisa Ferris and her husband Chris of Marshfield, Rob McCarthy Jr. and his wife Melissa of Halifax, and Mary Coughlin and her husband Marty of Scituate. Stepfather to Rich Brady and his wife Laura of Cornelius, NC, Andrew Brady and his wife Sara of Somerville, and Mallory Wuori and her husband Paul of Hingham. Loving brother to Richie McCarthy and his wife Nancy of Westwood, and the late William McCarthy. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2011 and continued to live a full life. He faced his challenges with strength and humor and never complained. The family wants to extend a special Thank You to all who took care of Bob in his last years. Most notably, the staff at Bridges at EPOCH in Hingham for ensuring Bob’s comfort since last August, the team at Caring Hospice Services, John and Barbara Scanlan for their weekly cards, his sister-in-law Barbara Long for all of her support and Beth Healy for her love, caretaking skills and support.
