Roberta (Sousa) Lewis

Roberta (Sousa) Lewis, of Englewood, Florida, formerly of Canton and Wareham, Massachusetts, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham surrounded by her loving family. She was 92.

Roberta was born in Boston on September 17, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Gulizia) Sousa.

Roberta was a beloved wife, devoted mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, dear sister and cherished friend. A woman of extraordinary grace and spirit, Roberta’s life was defined by her love for family, her vibrant energy, and her deep devotion to those around her.

Roberta was a woman of many passions. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life—whether it was cooking with her children and grand-children, reading a favorite novel, walking with her husband, Donald, at the Englewood beach, or entertaining at their Cape-house in Wareham. Alongside her husband, Don, Roberta enjoyed traveling to Florida every winter where they often visited the Selby and Ding Darling Gardens, creating lasting moments together where they finally retired in the warmth of the Florida sunshine.

A lifelong lover of sports, Roberta was an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Whether cheering on her teams from the comfort of home or watching with friends at the Elks Lodge, her enthusiasm and unwavering support for her favorite players was a constant source of joy.

Above all, Roberta was devoted to her family and loved spending treasured moments with them. Family gatherings were at the heart of her life, and she loved when we were all together. Roberta with her infectious laughter, loving nature, and boundless energy kept us all entertained.

A woman with a heart for service, Roberta was deeply involved in her community. She was a proud member of the Wareham New Bedford Lodge of Elks #73, the National Organization of Women, and the Canton Women’s Club. As a Camp Fire Girls leader, she mentored young girls, guiding them with kindness and compassion. Roberta was also a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Englewood Florida, where she selflessly gave her time helping. Professionally, Roberta served her community as a successful realtor, her coworkers always joked that Roberta was ‘’dialing for dollars” long before the internet.

Roberta’s life was a testament to the values she held dear; love, family, faith, and service. She was energetic, spirited, happy, and thoughtful, always putting the needs of others before her own. Elegant and beautiful, both inside and out, Roberta was a beacon of light to all who knew her. Her kindness, selflessness, and warm heart will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable spirit.

Roberta was the beloved wife of the late Donald Thomas Lewis, who passed away in 2012. Together they shared 62 loving years. She was the devoted mother of Joseph Matthew Lewis of Stoughton, Donald Lewis II and his partner Linda Oram of Taunton, Cynthia Lewis of Quincy, Ginny Lee Lewis and her husband Bill Teed of Onset, and Robin Lewis of Englewood, Florida. Roberta was the loving grandmother of Jennifer McGrath and her husband Dan of East Providence, Rhode Island, DJ Lewis of Deep Creek, Florida, Sophia Lewis of Bellingham, Washington, Sarah Cody of St. Louis, Missouri, Cassie Cody of Englewood, Florida, Melissa Cody of Petersburg, Ohio, Zoe Antonopoulos and her husband Brendan Mulrooney of Quincy, and Billy Teed and his wife Meghan of Mashpee. She was the loving great grandmother of Tamsyn Lewis of Bellingham, Washington, and Owen Mulrooney of Quincy and Mackenzie Teed of Maine. Roberta was the dear sister of Maria Shapiro and her late husband Samuel of Weymouth and was preceded in death by her siblings Virginia Harlow and Joseph Sousa. Roberta is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, her dear friend Jack O’Donnell of Florida, and her adoring pup companion, Lilly.
