Sally Hanscom Mundt

July 12, 1939 – April 7, 2026

Sally Hanscom Mundt passed away peacefully in Hingham, Massachusetts on April 7, 2026. She was 86 years old. Sally was born in Norwalk, Connecticut to Charlotte Chase and Homer Warren Hanscom. An only child, Sally grew up moving about the country, as her father was transferred to various military bases, including Fort Ritchie, (MD), Fort Sill (OK) and Fort Leavenworth (KS). During World War II, Sally and her mother, Charlotte, lived with Charlotte’s mother and father in Haverhill, MA. After Homer’s return from the war, Homer decided to move his family to sunny California. They settled in Santa Monica, and Sally attended Westlake School for Girls in Westlake, CA (currently known as Harvard-Westlake School).

Sally was always at the top of her class and was later accepted to Stanford University. She often recalled how distracted she was during her freshman classes at Stanford, as she had never had boys in her classes before. It was there that she met her future husband, Barry, a junior. They continued to date throughout her college career and married in Stanford Chapel in June 1961, the day after her graduation. They were happily married for over 60 years.

Sally was a unique individual in that she was interested in and adept at both the arts and the sciences. At Stanford, she pursued majors in both Music (classical piano) and Pre-Med. After graduation, she found work as a Physical Therapist at the San Jose (CA) Rehabilitation Center. Soon after, they welcomed their first child, a son named Kevin Warren, followed two years later by another son, Trevor Stevens. Their daughter, Stacey Corbin, arrived three years later. In 1969, the family moved across the country to Atlanta, GA, when Barry joined Peat, Marwick Mitchell’s consulting office there.

Despite raising three children with a husband who traveled extensively for work, Sally was always involved in numerous volunteer organizations. Through her role as president of the Atlanta Symphony’s Junior Committee, she became highly involved in their annual fundraising event, the Atlanta Decorators’ Showhouse. From that experience grew a desire to become an interior decorator herself. She attended the Art Institute of Atlanta and received her Associate of Arts degree in 1978, after which she started her own interior design firm, The Very Idea, Unltd. Over the next six years, she grew the business to include dozens of residential and commercial clients. In 1984, Barry was transferred to KPMG’s US headquarters, and they moved to New York City. Two years later, they relocated to Darien, CT, and Sally pivoted once again, becoming a licensed realtor. Serving new home buyers, Sally was able to revive her interior design business in Connecticut.

Ever the nomads, Sally and Barry would have two more moves in their retirement years – first to Asheville, NC for 10 years and then to Portland, OR for seven years. Barry passed in in 2023, at which time Sally moved back to New England to be closer to daughter Stacey in Massachusetts. With this final move, Sally felt as if she was “going home” to reconnect with her roots. Her parents and her grandparents on both sides were from Massachusetts and Maine.

Sally is survived by her three children: Kevin (Michelle), Trevor (Fu-chin) and Stacey (Mike); as well as six adult grandchildren: Taylor, Dalton, McKay, Ashton, Celia and Tristan; two great-grandchildren: Turner and Maddie (and a third on the way). At Sally’s request, there will be no service. She will be buried in the Hanscom family plot in South Berwick, Maine.
