Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Samuel J. Berte, of Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Corticobasal Degeneration. He was 70 years old. Sam faced his illness with strength and bravery.

Born in Boston on October 27, 1955, Sam was the beloved son of the late Philip and Catherine Berte. He attended and graduated from Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury.

Following graduation, Sam proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. He was honorably discharged and awarded the Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his dedicated service.

After his time in the Marines, Sam began a long and distinguished career with the Boston Police Department, where he served for over 30 years. Demonstrating his commitment to professional growth, he pursued a degree in criminal justice while serving as a Boston police officer, graduating cum laude from Quincy College. He retired from headquarters as a firearm evidence technician, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues through his professionalism and dedication.

Outside of his career, Sam found great joy in coaching Parkway Little League, tending to his large vegetable garden, and cooking and grilling for family and friends. He was also a proud member of the Braintree Gun Club. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing the guitar and accordion, even forming a small band with his brothers.

Above all else, Sam was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband to Sherrill Berte and a proud father to Sean Berte and his wife Jillian of Roslindale, Elizabeth Berte of Dedham, Jillian Berte of Boston, Natalie Kokoros and her husband Michael of Braintree, and Emily Berte of Weymouth. He was a cherished grandfather to Joseph, Matthew, Anna, Odin, Beatrix, and Brooks, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. Beloved son in law to Dorothy and Robert Dorsey.

Sam is also survived by his brother, Michael Berte, and was predeceased by his brothers Alexander and Philip Berte.

Sam was known for his strong work ethic, his sense of humor, and his unwavering dedication to those he loved. He worked hard to provide for his family but always made time for what mattered most. Whether that meant family vacations or cherished summer trips to Story Land. He was proud to be a Marine, a police officer, a father, and a grandfather.

He will be remembered as a strong, courageous, and loving man whose legacy lives on through the family he built and the lives he touched.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday 4/26/2026 from 2-5 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:45 AM on Monday 4/27/2026 prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Weymouth at 10:30 AM.
