Sandra Winquist of Chestertown, Maryland, died on June 9th, 2026, at her home. She was 81. She was born on August 29th, 1944, in London, the daughter of the late Thomas Hooley and Mary Cassie. She and her mother returned to the United States in 1947, and resided in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was very close with her grandparents, Alex and Hannah Cassie, who also helped raise her.

Ms. Winquist graduated from Quincy High School in Quincy, MA in 1962. She married her husband Donald Winquist in 1965, and graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts in 1966. The couple moved to Wilmington, DE in 1968 and earned her master's degree in nutrition in 1970 from the University of Delaware. She was a registered dietitian. Their daughter Karen Marie was born in 1970, and Aileen Sandra was born in 1972.

Don was working at Hercules, Inc in Wilmington and was transferred to Pulaski, VA in 1976. The family moved to Pulaski where she taught as a professor at Virginia Tech for six years. The family then returned to Wilmington, Delaware in 1980 and she taught at Drexel University for four years. She later taught at the University of Delaware as a nutritionist until she retired. She traveled with her husband extensively during her retirement years.

She was a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In 1990 they moved to Chestertown, Maryland, and resided on Still Pond Creek for 30 years. She was a member of Chester River Yacht and Country Club where she served on the board of directors as house chairperson. She was proud to win the nine-hole championship one year and also enjoyed playing in the club’s bocce league. She and Don were members of the Columbia Sailing Association and explored the Bay on a 38-foot Ericsson sailboat. She was an extremely talented and experienced knitter and made many cherished sweaters, scarves, mittens and other creations for her family and friends. She also delighted in cooking and baking, but most of all, she loved being a grandmother.

Mrs. Winquist is survived by her husband, Donald Winquist, along with daughters Karen Smith and husband Peter, and Aileen Winquist and husband Morgan Smith. She is also survived by a brother George Hooley, five grandchildren, Ben (wife Jen), Colleen, Alex, Sahara, and Aspen, along with two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Henry Smith. Services will be held at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road Chestertown, MD on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Simmons University 300 Fenway Boston MA 02115.
