Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Susan A. McAleney, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, in Hingham, Massachusetts, at the age of 90. Born on January 19, 1936, in Boston, MA, Susan was a cherished member of a large and loving family, carrying with her always the warmth and strength of her Irish heritage and the close-knit community of Savin Hill where she was raised.

Susan was one of nine siblings born to the late Cornelius and Margaret (Buttimer) Glavin. Growing up surrounded by family, she shared a bond with her brothers and sisters, many of whom preceded her in death: Margaret Murray, Katherine White, Imelda Meiggs, Walter, William, Cornelius, and Michael Glavin. She is survived by her dear sister, Mary Costello, and her husband Larry of Mashpee, MA, along with numerous nieces and nephews who carry forward the family legacy.

A proud graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School, Susan’s life was deeply enriched by her dedication to family. She was married to the late Thomas (Mac) McAleney, with whom she built a life marked by love and resilience. Together, they raised seven children: Thomas (married to Patty) of Melbourne, Florida; Carolyn Sullivan of Whitman, Massachusetts; Paul (married to MaryRose) of Weymouth, Massachusetts; Maureen Penella (married to Joseph) of Dorchester, Massachusetts; Sean (married to Darlene) of Weymouth, Massachusetts; and Betsy Wyllie (married to Brian) of Rockland, Massachusetts. The family also mourns her daughter, Susan Mackay (survived by her husband Doug), who predeceased her.

Susan was a proud and devoted grandmother to Matthew, Lauren, Timothy, Kara, Kelly, Patrick, Bridget, Erin, Gregory, Ashley, Daniel, William (Buddy), Paige, Tucker, Hannah, and Brendan. Her delight extended to her role as Great Nana, a title she bore with immense joy for Carter, Caden, Lily Susan, and Rosie. Her family gatherings at places such as Denisport, Squantum Yacht Club, Southport, and Naples were filled with laughter, love, and treasured memories that spoke to her generous spirit and deep affection for her children and grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Susan treasured her Irish roots and the values instilled in her from her upbringing in the Savin Hill community. She carried that heritage proudly, allowing it to guide her through life’s challenges and celebrations alike. Her spirit was marked by kindness, strength, and an enduring commitment to those she loved.

Susan is now reunited with her beloved Mac, daughter Susan, her siblings, and lifelong friends who shared in her journey. Though her passing leaves a profound void, her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.

Susan’s life was a testament to the power of love, family, and heritage, and her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration.

Susan A. McAleney’s presence graced the lives she touched, and her warmth remains a lasting gift to us all. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
