IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan "Sue"
Granai
March 24, 1943 – March 20, 2026
Susan “Sue” Granai, 82, beloved wife, loving mother, devoted grandmother, inspiring teacher and trusted friend died peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Linden Ponds after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s.
She was born in Waltham, MA, on March 24, 1943, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Firth of Milton, MA. After graduating from Milton High School, she attended the University of Vermont, where she graduated with honors in 1964 as a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Sue married the love of her life and best friend Ray “Tom” Granai, with whom she shared a special, once-in-a-lifetime love. They started a family together and after teaching briefly in Brockton and Weymouth, Sue went on to have a twenty-year career as an 8th grade math and algebra teacher at Norwell Middle School. Sue was a dedicated teacher, and her firm yet compassionate style touched the lives of many students who remember her as a favorite.
Sue and Tom lived a very happy life and raised their family in Norwell. They retired to their “dream house” on the Cape, to a yard brimming with beach roses and hydrangeas. They spent their golden years together at Linden Ponds, where Sue cultivated new friendships while reconnecting with people from their past. She was known for being a good listener, able to make family, friends and her students feel important and heard. If you told Sue something in confidence that’s where it stayed, and her kids feel lucky to have been loved so unconditionally by her. She was their “rock”, always so strong and wise and ready with supportive advice that helped shape and better their lives. With a kind and warm smile, Sue showed a genuine interest in everyone she met.
Sue was very social and enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends. She loved to garden, enjoyed playing cards and dancing, and she never saw a book she didn’t want to read.
Sue was known fondly as “Gigi” by her grandchildren. She loved to bake with them and was always planning creative activities, whether it was miniature golfing, going to the beach and even a fun talent show, where everyone was a winner.
Sue approached her illness with bravery and patience, maintaining a sense of humor and good nature that showed admirable strength and grace every day.
Sue is survived by her son Scott Granai and wife Beth of Cary, NC, daughter Stephanie Gould and husband Justin of Norwell, and by her grandchildren Allison, Brendan and Adam and Rachel and Sean. She is survived by her sister Sandra and husband Richard of Claremont, NH and preceded in death by her sister Sara DiPalma of Texas.
Arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at: https://give.michaeljfox.org
