Terence “Terry” P. O’Malley, a longtime resident of Quincy, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. He was 80.
He was born in Boston to Regina Josephine (Rogers) and Anthony Vincent O’Malley and raised in Natick and Newton. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Newton, he went on to earn his BA in history from Boston College, and his JD at Boston College Law. While at BC, he had the good fortune to meet the love of his life, Diane (Corcoran), at a friend’s party. The two married in 1970, later settling in Quincy and having two children, Rachel and Matthew. Terry and Diane spent more than 55 years together as a happily married couple and were a testament to their children about what it means to truly love and care for someone. Terry was a devoted father and offered endless support, guidance, and friendship to his children. He believed firmly in the value of education, and he worked hard to send his children to the College of the Holy Cross, Williams College, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Terry’s distinguished law career spanned 34 years. As a Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General in the 1970s, Terry argued two cases before the United States Supreme Court in 1975 and 1977. He spent most of his career as legal counsel for the University of Massachusetts, eventually becoming general counsel. He also served as general counsel for SBLI in Woburn before retiring.
Terry very much enjoyed his retirement. He was an avid reader of history and dedicated time every day to reading. He loved late mornings with Diane, reading the paper and discussing the news, taking walks to Wollaston Beach and around his Beechwood Knoll neighborhood. He traveled extensively in retirement, touring Rome and Madrid, driving across the country, and visiting state capitol buildings, historic battlefields, and national parks. He was a natural scholar, curious about the world and constantly learning. His dry sense of humor and quick wit brought laughter and levity to his family and friends. He was a gentleman, kind and generous to those he loved. He will be dearly missed.
Beloved husband of 55 years to Diane (Corcoran) O’Malley of Quincy. Devoted father to Rachel O’Malley of Quincy and Matthew O’Malley and his partner Valerie Rosenberg of Brooklyn, NY. Loving brother to Anthony O’Malley and his wife Marianne of Nashua, NH, Regina O’Malley and her husband Gary Comorau of Queens, NY, and Thomas O’Malley and his wife Betsy Horan of Norwalk, CT. Loving brother-in-law to Sheila O’Malley and her husband Ben DeWinter and Debra (Corcoran) and her husband James Heffernan of Millis, MA. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Predeceased by his parents, Regina Josephine (Rogers) and Anthony Vincent O’Malley, and his brothers: James, William, and Joseph O’Malley.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visitation on Monday, June 22, from 9-10:30 AM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Quincy. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM, immediately following the visitation at St. Ann’s Church, Quincy.
