William F. Cahill Sr. passed away on October 25, 2026, in North Fort Myers, at the age of 90. He was born on March 9, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Francis X. Cahill and Penelope T. Gill. A man of deep faith, steady character, and generous heart, Bill lived a life marked by service, devotion to family, dedication to students, and a lasting love of music, friendship, and community.

He was raised among Squantum and Quincy roots and was educated in the Quincy Public Schools. He graduated from North Quincy High School with the Class of 1954 and later attended Northeastern University and Bridgewater State University. Soon after high school, he answered the call to serve his country in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He served as an Airman First Class and Specialist Photographer and Commercial Photographer, entering through the Boston Army Base and being stationed at Greenville Air Force Base in Mississippi. Bill’s photos have been preserved and can be seen today in the Greenville Air Force Base Museum, in Greenville, Mississippi. He also served as an altar server and lifeguard at Greenville AFB, and was honorably discharged. His service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

It was also in Mississippi that he found the great love of his life, his beloved wife, Vonda. They were married for 69 years and built a life rich in love, travel, adventure, and enduring friendship. They made their home in Quincy for many years before spending their last 15 years together in Del Tura Golf & Country Club in North Fort Myers, Florida. To those who knew them, theirs was a remarkable partnership, full of warmth, loyalty, and joy.

Bill’s professional life reflected both creativity and discipline. In the early 1960s, he worked as an engineer with Keystone Camera Company in Boston and Neponset, where he designed a new portable home projector that was later manufactured by Keystone, helping bring a new generation of home theater experience into people’s lives. He later continued his engineering work with United Engineering in Randolph during the 1960s and 1970s.

His most enduring professional legacy was in education. For 32 years, Bill taught Machine Drafting, Mechanical Design, and CAD at Blue Hills Regional Vocational Technical High School in Canton, Massachusetts, and also served as a Blue Hills Night School instructor in the same fields. He was a gifted teacher who shaped lives not only through technical instruction, but through encouragement, discipline, and belief in the potential of his students. One especially meaningful tribute came from NASA astronaut and Starliner-1 Commander Scott Tingle, a 1983 graduate of the Blue Hills drafting and CAD program, who credited Bill as a foundational inspiration in his career. Bill was deeply honored to receive a phone call from Commander Tingle while he was aboard the International Space Station.

At Blue Hills, Bill gave of himself far beyond the classroom. Known affectionately as Coach Cahill, Mr. C., and “Spike,” he coached football, basketball, and girls volleyball. He served as Head Advisor to the Student Council and helped launch charitable efforts including Globe Santa, support for the New England Home for Little Wanderers, the Randolph Food Bank, and food and clothing drives. He also brought extraordinary energy and imagination to school life as a musical theater director for 19 years, producing 19 shows and debuting the “SHOWBOAT” variety show in 1975. The production was teacher-led and student-run, drawing together multiple school shops in a collaborative effort that reflected Bill’s belief in teamwork, craftsmanship, and pride in shared accomplishment. Through these productions, he shared his love of the music and entertainment of the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s with generations of students and the broader school community. He also established scholarship and trade awards for the Blue Hills community.

His commitment to music, fellowship, and service extended well beyond the school. A Roman Catholic throughout his life, he had early connections to Star of the Sea in Squantum, where he served as an altar boy, and to St. Ann’s in Wollaston. He was a member of the North Quincy Knights of Columbus, Council #2259, where he was a guitarist and songster with the Council Combo. He later carried the spirit of SHOWBOAT into the Knights of Columbus, directing and producing many shows throughout Quincy and introducing graduate students and past performers to the faith-filled service efforts of the organization. He was also a member of Quincy Lodge #943 of the Elks and Wareham-New Bedford Lodge #73.

Bill found great happiness in the simple and lasting pleasures of life. He loved sailing and treasured time with family and friends at his beloved cottage on Island Pond in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A self-taught guitarist, he loved to sing and lead sing-alongs. He was an avid golfer, a formidable cribbage player, and famously merciless in horseshoes. Those closest to him knew him as a gentle giant—soft-spoken, big-hearted, calm, and steady through every season of life. He was a dedicated and dependable father, a source of loving strength, and a proud grandfather whose joy only deepened in the company of his grandchildren.

The greatest passion of his life was, and remains, his beautiful Mississippi bride Vonda. Her love truly put the extra-blue in his beaming blue eyes. The many travels, adventures and friendships they shared allowed them to experience a fullness of life that is much sought after but rarely acheived.

He is survived by his wife, Vonda Cahill; his daughter, Pamela Ahl, and her husband, Charles R. Ahl Jr., of Scituate, Massachusetts; his son, William F. Cahill Jr., of Lincoln, Rhode Island; and his cherished grandchildren, Grace Ahl Dockendorff of Hull, Massachusetts, and Charles F. Ahl of Weymouth, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis X. Cahill and Penelope T. Gill.

William F. Cahill Sr. leaves behind a life of faithful service, creative energy, gentle strength, and deep love. He will be remembered in classrooms and rehearsal halls, on golf courses and by the water, in song, in laughter, and in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. May he rest in divine peace.
