William T. Hurley III (“Bill”), a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 3, 2026, at the age of 87.

Born on March 11, 1939, Bill grew up in Taunton, Massachusetts, and spent summers in Megansett on Cape Cod. He graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts, in 1957, where he played football and wrestled. He attended Harvard College as a member of the Class of 1961, later earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. At Harvard, he played football, wrestled, and was a member of the Pi Eta Club.

In 1967, Bill married the love of his life, Suzanne Seward Hurley ("Pidge"). They met at the Captain Kidd in Woods Hole and built a remarkable 56-year marriage. They spent many happy years together as a young married couple living in Boston before starting a family. They raised their daughters, Jess and Liz, at their home in Hingham, where they welcomed family and friends for countless holidays, Fourth of July celebrations, and pool parties, creating lasting traditions.

Bill enjoyed a long and rewarding career in the investment business in Boston, working at Salomon Brothers, Lehman Brothers, and beyond. He was respected for his integrity, humility, and sense of humor. He loved the camaraderie and atmosphere of the trading floor: the quick wit, practical jokes, and friendships that extended well beyond the office.

Bill served on the Board of Trustees of Tabor Academy for 25 years and was honored for his distinguished service. He was a longtime member of the Harvard Club of Boston, Hingham Yacht Club, and Cohasset Golf Club, and a former member of the Megansett Yacht Club. A devout Catholic, he was a faithful parishioner of St. Paul's Parish in Hingham.

In his roles as brother, spouse, father, grandfather, and uncle, Bill led with devotion, loyalty, and unwavering principles. As the eldest of five children, he took pride in looking after his younger sisters and brothers and setting a good example for “the little kids.” As a father, he gave Jess and Liz love, encouragement, opportunities, and independence. He took great pride in their academic, athletic, personal, and professional achievements and became their go-to person for sound advice and guidance in any situation. He could be formal and traditional but was a softie at heart, and his girls could always make him laugh. He found great joy in being a grandfather (“Papa”) to Hannah and Jane and was their best babysitter. He treasured his nieces and nephews, who all called him Uncle “Duke,” a childhood nickname that stayed with him for life.

Bill was principled, trustworthy, loyal, quick-witted, charismatic, dependable, unassuming, and meticulously organized. He could command a room with his stories, bringing them to life with spot-on accents, colorful impersonations, and impeccable comedic timing. He enjoyed driving with the top down while listening to The Beach Boys, sailing in Buzzards Bay, 1950s rock and roll music, New Year's Eve parties in Ascutney, VT, Jonathan Winters comedy, skiing with his family, boating in Hingham Harbor, Murdick's Fudge, nightcaps after everyone had gone home, and an “extra extra dry Beefeater martini on the rocks with a twist.”

Bill is survived by his daughters, Jessica Hurley Givney and her husband, Matthew Givney, of Hingham, MA, and Elizabeth Hurley and her husband, Jeffrey Modestino, also of Hingham, MA; his beloved granddaughters, Hannah and Jane Givney; his sister, Molly Moran of Atlanta, GA; his brothers, Robert Hurley of Cataumet, MA, and John Hurley of Falmouth, MA; and his adored nieces and nephews: Jonathan Owsley, Nicholas Owsley, Alison Moran, Catherine Faase, and Meredith Clark. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Suzanne "Pidge" Hurley; his parents, William T. Hurley Jr. and Mary C. Hurley; and his cherished sister, Susan Hurley.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald Street (off Central St.), Hingham. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church, Hingham. Burial will be private. A reception will follow in Hingham.
