Swanson, William Carl “Billy” of Weymouth, passed away surrounded by his loving family on September 6, 2026. He was 77 years old.

Born and raised with deep Dorchester roots, he was the son of the late Carl and Dorothea (Gray) Swanson.

Billy carried the values of hard work, loyalty, and neighborly kindness throughout his life. He was a true blue-collar man who spent more than 40 years working on elevators, beginning in construction and continuing through repairs and maintenance. He was proud of his work and of the union brotherhood he shared through Local 4. Billy approached every job with skill, patience, and determination, and he earned the respect of everyone who knew him through his steady hands and dependable nature.

Billy was a family man in every sense of the word, and family was everything to him. His greatest joy was being a grandfather, and he cherished every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. He loved gathering everyone together at the pool or on the boat, where laughter, conversation, and togetherness filled the day. Family celebrations and simple everyday moments alike meant the world to him, and he made sure those around him always felt his love. He was also known as a fixer, a jack of all trades, and a true MacGyver who could solve almost any problem with ingenuity and confidence.

He and his beloved wife Janet shared 55 years together, a marriage that began in high school and grew into a lifelong partnership built on love, friendship, and devotion. Their bond was a lasting example of commitment and trust, and together they built a life centered on home, family, and shared memories. Billy’s roots in Dorchester and his connection to St. Margaret’s remained an important part of his story.

Billy also served his country in the Air Force National Guard for six years, demonstrating the same sense of duty and responsibility that guided him in all areas of life. He was a man who gave of himself in many ways, including through service to others in the community. On Thanksgiving, he volunteered feeding the homeless at Great Scott's in Brighton, reflecting his generous spirit and his belief in helping those in need.

Outside of work and service, Billy enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. He loved hockey and coached Weymouth youth hockey, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with young players. He also enjoyed football and played in the park league for Dorchester. He loved to cook and took pride in preparing meals for family and friends. He enjoyed tending to plants and gardening, and he found happiness in visiting his favorite bartenders and enjoying a Bud Light. After retirement, he traveled cross country, taking in the beauty of the country and the freedom of the open road.

Billy’s memory will remain forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Janet Swanson. Cherished father to Jared Swanson and his wife Ann Marie, Lee Anne Clancy and her husband Patrick, and Jessica Wynn and her husband Brendan. Grandfather to Thomas Clancy and his wife Madison, Brendan Clancy, Victoria Clancy, Isabella Wynn, Nathan Wynn, Daria Swanson, and Tabitha Swanson. Brother of Janice Voto, Carol Wills, Bobby Swanson and his wife Karen, and Rick Swanson and his late wife Terry. Brother-in-law to Judy Melville and her husband Rich and Mary Locke and her devoted partner Rich. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 from 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:45 AM on Thursday 9/10/2026 prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Weymouth at 10:30 AM. Cremation will follow.
