It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of William Joseph "Bill" Torpey, Jr., of Hingham, MA, who passed away on July 24, 2026, at the age of 81, surrounded by family.

Beloved husband of 39 years to the late Pamela J. Torpey (Scofield). Devoted father to Erin Torpey and Matthew Torpey, and his wife Mary Beth. Longtime companion to the late Judee Herman. Dear brother to Mary Ober and Claire Casamento.

Bill was born in Melrose, MA to Alvina (Dane) and William J. Torpey on October 16, 1944, and raised in Malden, MA. After graduating from Malden High School in 1962, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College and an MBA from Columbia University. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant while serving in Thailand during the Vietnam War.

Bill had a successful career, enjoying a profession he loved. He served as President, and later Chairman, of the Massachusetts Capital Resource Company (MCRC) from 1982 until his retirement in 2012. Bill was instrumental in making MCRC a unique and influential source of capital growth throughout the Commonwealth. Under his leadership, MCRC became a trusted partner to hundreds of Massachusetts businesses, providing innovative financing that fueled expansion and helped create thousands of jobs. In 1998, while leading MCRC, Bill became the founding President of The Life Initiative, a community development investment fund. Bill believed deeply in investing in people and ideas, and his steady leadership strengthened both companies.

Bill was a devoted family man. Spending time with his family brought him tremendous joy, happiness, and fulfillment throughout his life. He married Pamela Scofield, his high school sweetheart, in 1967. Together they built a life filled with love, happiness, and many treasured memories. The two were devoted and dedicated parents to Erin and Matthew, raising them first in Plymouth, MA and then Hingham, MA. Bill was a loving father who was adored and admired by his children. He was always present, whether he was coaching a game or helping with homework, providing unwavering support throughout their lives.

After Pamela’s passing, Bill reconnected with Judee Herman, a childhood friend. The two shared a loving companionship for many years. They retired to Sandwich, MA, where they enjoyed gatherings with family and traveling together.

Bill was a dear brother-in-law to the late Lawrence Scofield, the late Deborah Hennessey, and Janet Lezberg. He was also an uncle to Stephanie Psenicka, Heather Scofield, Christopher Hennessey, Ryan Hennessey, the late Jeffrey Hennessey, Alexandra Picca and Lauren Czarnota.

Bill was known for his wisdom, kindness, sense of humor, and generous spirit. He had a sharp mind and an extraordinary gift for numbers. Those who knew Bill could rely on him for guidance and support, knowing he was a man of strong principles and integrity. Bill found joy in the outdoors, whether it was basking on the beach, skiing at Bromley Mountain, or walking along the Cape Cod Canal. He took pride in cultivating a beautiful yard, decorating it for the different seasons, and creating a sanctuary that reflected his appreciation for nature's beauty. An avid reader and lifelong learner, he also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life - playing cards, mastering sudoku, and indulging his sweet tooth. He loved sports and watching movies, especially westerns and rom-coms, and was known to watch his favorites over and over again. His travels, from summer vacations to Martha's Vineyard, winter getaways to Aruba, and excursions to Ireland and Italy, enriched his life and provided cherished memories.

Bill was a special man who touched the lives of all who knew him. He was much loved and will be dearly missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to the visitation on Thursday, September 10th, from 3:30-6 PM, at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald Street, Hingham, MA. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 11th, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul's Church, 147 North Street, Hingham, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
