Margaretha (Wendel) “Peggy” Newton, of Hingham, Massachusetts, formerly of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts, and McLean, Virginia, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Linden Ponds in Hingham. She was 83.

Born in Ware, Massachusetts on September 28, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Robert C. and E. Barbara (Carroll) Wendel. Peggy graduated from Ware High School in 1955 and earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Mt. Holyoke College in So. Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1959.

Over her lifetime, Peggy worked in a variety of fields and positions, including teaching and arts education, for the U.S. government, and in residential interior design. Peggy believed, also, in volunteerism, serving with the American Red Cross as a ‘gray lady’ at various hospitals, at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, in McLean, VA, where she was an ordained elder, and with the Naval Officers Wives’ Club. She enjoyed also working in her incredibly beautiful gardens, singing in church and community choirs, reading, crossword puzzles, travel, attending concerts, particularly the symphony and the opera, and enjoying the company of her beloved bichons frises. Her favorite place to travel was France, but she also went to such far-afield places as above the Arctic Circle and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Peggy was a loving, strong, and devoted woman. The spouse of a United States Navy Submarine officer, Peggy and her family moved countless times. She always made their home beautiful, warm, and welcoming. She was incredibly and selflessly supportive of her husband’s lifelong service to the United States. She was a breast cancer survivor. In every circumstance, she was a woman of graciousness and charm, and cultivated strong relationships with those around her. She will be missed by all the lives she touched.

Peggy was the beloved wife of Capt. George B. Newton, Jr. (USN Ret.). The two met on Cape Cod in Chatham in the summer of 1957 and married on June 14, 1959, in Ware. Together they shared nearly 62 loving years of marriage. She was the devoted mother of the late George B. Newton III and James W. Newton of Sharon, Massachusetts. Peggy equally loved her daughter-in-law, Kimberly A. Amaral Newton, and her granddaughter, Margaret, who was named in her honor. She was the beloved sister of Ena Barbara Carlin of Florida, and loved Barbara’s family dearly, including her brother-in-law Dr. Richard Carlin, and her nieces and nephews, Robert, Christine, David, and Catherine.

Peggy’s family will be planning a memorial service at a later date, and she will be interred with her son in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
