Veneta Proctor Roebuck

Veneta Proctor Roebuck, 88, of Cohasset passed away peacefully June 2, with family and her beloved dog Nellie by her side.

Veneta was born Feb. 2, 1933 in Lockport, NY daughter of Cleon (Taber) and Carl A Proctor.  Vee and her brother Sherry spent their youth sailing on Lake Ontario. As the daughter of a fly fisherman, hunter and conservationist her passion and knowledge of nature grew.  She graduated from Lockport High School, the University of Vermont and Boston University with a degree in Special Education. As a 4th grade teacher, she was selected as the 1st Community Ambassador of Lockport to the Experiment in International Living (1955) in Austria.

She met her future husband Arthur while attending BU and they were married on June 20th, 1959 by Arthur’s father at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, RI. They lived in Marblehead, eventually settling in Cohasset in an original dairy farmhouse on Beechwood St. in 1967. While raising four children they ran Arthur Roebuck Catering and opened The British Relief Restaurant in Hingham Square.

Vee and her family enjoyed Sandy Beach and became members of the Sailing Club. Vee was also a substitute teacher for Cohasset and Hull. She loved gardening, sailing, hiking every trail in town and walking the beach with her dogs. Vee and her dogs could always be spotted driving her jeep around town. She adored the winter season – skiing, skating – and had the best sweater collection. Veneta was a passionate 25 year volunteer for the Cohasset Conservation Committee and was honored with Citizen of the Year 2012. Arthur, Vee and family were very proud.

Veneta was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Roebuck and survived by her children, Amy R Jones (Andrew Jones) Huron Ohio, Andrew Roebuck (Dr. Jacqueline Slavik) Milton, Sarah Roebuck (Robert Mills) Melbourne, FL, Samuel Roebuck of Cohasset, two granddaughters Alexandra Jones and Lauren Roebuck and extended family.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at the Lightkeepers House Bancroft Hall in Cohasset on Sunday July 18th 1-4.  A family burial service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, RI. In memory of  Veneta donations may be made to: The Trustees of Reservations or a Conservation organization of choice.
