Condolences to the Family of Vincent L. Hennessy Jr.

2022

To his children and friends, please accept my belated condolences. Dr. Hennessy made a difference in my life 44 long years ago. Dr. Hennessy performed Open Heart surgery on me on November 1, 1978 (All Saints day) at Northside Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. His youthful appearance masked his incredible ability. I have thought of him often and I am saddened to hear of his passing. I was a naive, 21 year old kid when Dr. Hennessy saved my life. I would like to remind his loved ones of the thousands of seriously ill patients who were aided and lives saved by his remarkable ability and dedication. Be PROUD, very proud. I will be forever indebted to this man and I am blessed to have met him long ago. With kindest regards, Robert Bowden Houston, Texas 281.660.1353

At jazz camp in Albany several years ago, Vinny, Marilyn, Dorothy Boisseau (my partner) and I enjoyed a very serious and meaningful breakfast discussion about our music. Vinny, usually quiet and "laid back," was wonderfully forthcoming and insightful, offering several observations worthy of serious consideration. I wish the details were as clear now as then but my memory isn't as reliably detailed as it once was. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

Vin and I played clarinet together in the Harvard Band from 1959-1962. He loved jazz and made a point of sharing his enthusiasm for it. Once when the Band went to New York to play at the Harvard Club, he insisted we go to the Five Spot, Cafe then a very important jazz venue. I forget who was playing but I can still see Vin sitting at the table with a huge grin as we listened to the music. And his laugh---- loud, unique and infections. I had the privilege of talking with Vin on the phone last summer and that laugh hadn't changed a bit. He will be missed.

I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your father, partner, friend. Dr Hennessey was an extremely conscientious, hardworking physician and an integral part of South Shore Hospital. Often his patients would stay in our critical care area, in keeping with the close monitoring required after thoracic surgery. He cared deeply for his patients, and frequently checked on them during the day both personally and by phone. His dry humor as well as his concern for and appreciation of our team made him an unofficial member of our unit's staff. We also had the great pleasure of hearing him play at some hospital functions. Rest in peace, Vinnie. We'll keep you in our hearts.

Our sincerest sympathies to the Hennessy family. All the years we had been neighbors, together we enjoyed watching our children grow into adults. To add a funny note, Dan and I remember the morning you calmly advised us over the phone how to remove an earring from our then 2 year olds nose. We were so thankful to have you in our community. Your kind and compassionate manner made you a standout physician who will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to know you. Dan and Rosemarie Lauria

Dear Hennessy family and Marilyn, We are very saddened to hear of the passing of Vinnie. I knew him through Bill Giarrusso (former boss) when they and others had their "bicycle riding group". In more recent years Vinnie and Marilyn enjoyed the music of Fred and friends and we enjoyed it when Vinnie sat in on sax ! Our sincere sympathy to you and may he rest in peace.
