John was an example of all that is good about Americans. He was a loyal American, exemplified fairness and intelligence, shared his knowledge willingly and cheerfully. It was a pleasure to know him, speak with him, and discuss nuclear power. I will miss our periodic discussions but more I will miss him.

Martha, We will always remember the happy times we spent with you, John, and Aunt Deeter in Boston, as well as with the two of you at Matt and Leila's weddings. John was an exceptionally intelligent and caring man, and we will always treasure memories of him and the love, enthusiasm, and fun he brought to your family and to everyone who knew him. You are in our thoughts and prayers. With much love, Trudel and Abbas

Dear and wonderful Martha, How very, very sad for you and for all who loved admired John! I think we all feared that his end was nigh, but hoped he could hold on longer! We hope he was not allowed to be in terrible pain in those lasts weeks, but know that his last day or days, surrounded by music and carols and love and all of you must have been balm to his soul. Your time together was, of course, way too short, but they were, no doubt, full and rich years, which you will always carry with you in your heart and memory. I too am so very glad that I had a chance to meet him when you were in Phoenix several years ago! With hugs and much love, Karen

Martha We are so saddened by this news and offer you our deepest condolences. We were both glad to have the opportunity at the Blue Ginger dinner to speak with John. What a remarkable man, and certainly from the tribute to him, a man of so many extraordinary dimensions. Clearly, he masked his discomfort well and was so gracious-- and so very proud of you. Our fondest thoughts are with you at this time. Arleyn and Newt.

Remembering My Friend John Bewick John was a good person. He was thoughtful, kind, caring, and he was driven to do good. This was his life’s mission. His passion. His intellect, lack of ego involvement, and being nice helped him to advance what he believed to be the right thing to do. When we are gone, how many of us will be so characterized? So this is why John was so special…he was a rare person who didn’t exactly push to stand out but stood out all the same. I first met John in the early 1970’s when we both joined the environmental administration of Mayor John Lindsay. He and I collaborated on some joint projects, especially those having to do with the control of automobile-related pollution. John was instrumental in planning the closing of Madison Avenue, which was seen as a forerunner of attempts to create a more pedestrian friendly city and as a way of blunting the onslaught of pollution in an urban core. Later on when John was James Schlesinger’s executive assistant at the Atomic Energy Commission, we worked closely on a number of important projects having to do with the environmental and safety consequences of civilian nuclear power plants. John had the deep trust of Schlesinger, and was able to outsmart and outmaneuver powerful entrenched bureaucrats to advance the public’s best interests. This year, John and I collaborated closely on trying to advise the Chinese Government on how to fight the devastating air pollution that blankets their country. Despite dealing with what would turn out to be his own personal battle, he was the old John that I knew from over 40 years ago, enthusiastic, creative, with a single-minded purpose to advance solutions for the benefit of the Chinese people. This carried forward through even to his last days. Just 2 days before he passed away, we talked and he wanted to send me an email with some thoughts. Beyond his loving wife Martha who helped John through the torment of radiation and chemotherapy and looked for ways to comfort him, ease his suffering, and guide him painlessly along a foregone path, it is good to know that his children and many friends brought him joy and expressed their appreciation to have known him and for the life he led. In the end, what more can any of us ask for. Jack C Fensterstock Bethesda, Maryland December 27, 2014
